Chair Yoga: An Accessible and Gentle Yoga Practice That Helps You Move with More Confidence

Discover how chair yoga can improve mobility, balance, strength and wellbeing, whether you're new to yoga, recovering from injury or simply looking for a gentler way to move.

What is Chair Yoga?

When people hear the words chair yoga, they often imagine it's a slightly watered-down version of yoga.

It isn't.

Chair yoga is a form of accessible yoga that uses a chair as a source of support. The chair becomes another prop, much like a yoga block or a strap, helping you move safely and confidently while still experiencing the many benefits of yoga.

A class may include gentle stretches, strengthening poses, breathing practices and relaxation. Some movements take place seated, while others use the chair for support during standing postures.

Rather than making yoga "easier," the chair simply makes it more accessible.

Who is Chair Yoga For?

One of the wonderful things about chair yoga is that it can be adapted to suit many different people!

It may be a great option if you:

  • Are completely new to yoga

  • Have reduced mobility or balance concerns

  • Are returning after injury or illness

  • Spend long hours sitting at a desk and don’t move much throughout the day

  • Want to rebuild strength gradually

  • Are looking for a slower, more mindful style of movement

  • Have been advised by your healthcare professional that gentle exercise is appropriate during pregnancy

  • Simply want a welcoming, supportive environment to move your body

You don't need to be flexible, fit or experienced to begin! It’s open to everyone.

Common Misconceptions About Chair Yoga

"Isn't chair yoga just for older adults?"

Not at all.

While chair yoga is popular with older adults, it's suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Many athletes, office workers and people recovering from injury also benefit from using a chair for support.

"Is it real yoga?"

Absolutely.

Yoga is much more than balancing in complicated poses.

Yoga is about connecting movement with breath, building awareness and creating a healthier relationship with your body. Whether you're practising on a mat or with the support of a chair, you're still practising yoga. Yoga is a combination of movement, breath, meditation and our behaviours on and off the mat.

"Will I still get stronger?"

With regular practice, chair yoga can help build strength, improve mobility and support balance through gentle, consistent movement that's appropriate for your individual needs.

The Benefits of Chair Yoga

With regular practice, chair yoga may help you:

  • Improve flexibility and joint mobility.

  • Build strength in a gradual and supportive way.

  • Improve balance and stability.

  • Ease everyday stiffness and tension.

  • Support posture.

  • Reduce stress and encourage relaxation.

  • Improve body awareness and confidence.

  • Create space to slow down and breathe.

Remember, progress doesn't have to mean doing more. Sometimes it means moving with more ease throughout your day.

How Chair Yoga Can Make Everyday Life Easier

One of the biggest benefits of chair yoga isn't what happens during class, it's actualyly what happens afterwards.

Many people notice that everyday activities begin to feel easier.

You might find yourself:

  • Getting out of bed with less stiffness,

  • Feeling steadier walking up and down stairs,

  • Carrying shopping with more confidence,

  • Reaching cupboards more comfortably,

  • Standing for longer without discomfort,

  • Feeling calmer when work or family life becomes stressful,

  • Having more energy for the people and activities you love.

Small improvements can make a big difference over time.
